The colors of things…

If you ever decide that you want to paint a wall in you home any color than white, or some shade thereof, think very carefully about that decision. Then, think about it some more. Especially if you’re thinking about a dark color.

First, the color never looks quite like it’s supposed to. I remember my parents painted the walls in their bedroom a chocolate brown color. I don’t think it was supposed to be quite so chocolate. Or maybe, not quite so brown. But my mother was not happy about it. Now, we have a red color in our dining room that is nothing like the little bit on the paint chip. Mind you, it didn’t turn out a bad color. Just not the color on the little chip — or any of the chips on the card!

The other problem with dark colors is getting a good, even covering. Dark colors show every little mistake you make in finishing the wall, and every little imperfection in your painting … um … technique.

And, finally, it has the real propensity for jumping off of the roller or pad or brush and attacking the proper white paint all around it. No matter how careful you are.

I hate paint.

This is probably a silly question, but is the red any closer to “correct” under a different type of lighting than you normally have in the dining room? We’ve run into that kind of problem twice over the years:

1) a pale blue bathroom which was a LOT bluer under fluorescent than the original incandescent lighting (I’ve been told that this was probably related to the particular pigment used); and

2) a pale yellow bathroom that turned out VERY yellow until we switched the incandescent bulbs to the GE “Reveal” ones, which apparently have a spectrum closer to daylight.
