Various Technical Thingies
After learning of a security issue in WordPress 1.5.1.1, I upgraded to 1.5.1.2. Of course, even though the problem apparently only presents itself when using the default theme, I thought it better safe than sorry. Interestingly, all the backend version indicators still read 1.5.1.1.
I added a backend stats plugin to the site. Unlike the old site, the stats are not available to the general public. Sorry.
I’ve learned that I could probably live with DSL in lieu of cable. I’m at my parents home, and they’ve gone DSL from dialup. It seems to be just as zippy as our cable connection at home, and it’s a good bit less expensive. If we go with the alternative phone carrier in our area, which we’ve been talking about anyway, we can get our phone service and DSL for something like $50 a month, plus long distance (at only 5 cents a minute). And, Verizon is only about $10 more per month than that. Hmmm…

The only thing I would caution about the “alternative” phone providers, and I only bring this up because I know two people who’ve been bitten by this, is that their idea of “local calling area” can be drastically different from Verizon. Especially if the alternative you’re looking at is Cavalier. You’d hate to find out that Baltimore City is a long-distance call after the fact.

Cable Versus DSL
I ended up with cable instead of DSL because I ditched the land line in favor of a cell phone and the telco can’t offer me video over copper (yet)….

Rob,
I had Cavalier for my land-line phone when I was in Catonsville, and the service was excellent. However, your point about local calling areas is a good one. Interestingly, Verizon’s idea of a local calling area is pretty bizarre. From Columbia, you can call anywhere around the [Baltimore] Beltway, except out the Reisterstown Road corridor!

Further to my comment yesterday, even with Verizon, living in Columbia, you’ve got a 50-50 chance of getting a “DC” number or “Baltimore” number. If you have a preferenec, you have to remember to specify what you want for your local calling area.
With Cavalier, you can keep your same number, if desired, and so, the calling area should follow the number.
