  • A Few Good Plug-ins - May 31st, 2005
  • I’ve added a few new plug-ins to the WP install here today, including two to help to improve the security of the site.
The first allows me to change the length of time that cookies are valid for. It seems that the cookie that lets a browser think that I’m logged into WP defaults to [...]

  • Various Technical Thingies - May 28th, 2005
  • After learning of a security issue in WordPress 1.5.1.1, I upgraded to 1.5.1.2. Of course, even though the problem apparently only presents itself when using the default theme, I thought it better safe than sorry. Interestingly, all the backend version indicators still read 1.5.1.1.
I added a backend stats plugin to the site. Unlike the old [...]

  • SYMBOL - May 27th, 2005
  • /random/equality.jpg
This week’s Photo Friday theme is “Symbol.” Taken at the Gettysburg battlefield park, this statue in silouhette is a symbol of the freedoms we enjoy in the United States.

  • Image Bar - May 26th, 2005
  • Well, until such time as I find a real replacement for MTRecentImages, or can bribe Rob to write one for me, random images will have to do. I’ve added Priss’ Multiple Random Images plugin to the site to generate a half dozen random images from all of those uploaded to the site. It’s not perfect, [...]

  • BOOKS:Pages - May 26th, 2005
  • /random/Pages.jpg
Today’s Thursday Challenge theme is “Books.”
This image was made on our most recent trip to Williamsburg, VA. They have two restored, hand-operated, presses there, and they use the presses to print a large number of publications and reproduction publications. The time-honored methods are still used, too. Type is set by hand, not by computer, and [...]

  • WordPress 1.5.1.1 Upgrade - May 25th, 2005
  • I’ve completed the upgrade to version 1.5.1.1 of WordPress. Supposedly, this version fixes all the bugs in 1.5, as well as the bugs that were introduced by the version originally intended to fix the bugs in version 1.5.
    Ouch.
There appear to be a couple of things that require minor tweaking, but otherwise, the upgrade went smoothly.
    Post [...]

  • Jennifer — The Accidental Portrait - May 25th, 2005
  • /random/Jennifer.jpg
This an old picture that I shot while working on some promotional material for a singer/songwriter back in the early ’90s. I call it an accidental portrait because of the way the image, as presented here, came about…

The lighter areas in the image, where the picture fades to white, are the result of fogged film! [...]

  • Nature’s Grafitti - May 24th, 2005
  • /random/PICT0285.jpg
This bright red “flower” is a type of honeysuckle. I think it looks like nature’s idea of grafitti

There’s a ulterior motive for this shot — to test a new WP plugin called PhotoPress for uploading images. It seems a lot easier and a lot cleaner.
    [UPDATE 8 September, 2005]
This image has been moved to a [...]

  • According to a national study, your highest rate of productivity occurs on Tuesday, between 10 a.m. and noon.

  • Thinking Creatively - May 24th, 2005
  • Have you ever found yourself in a photographic rut, where you just can’t seem to shake the creative doldrums and accomplish anything interesting?

  • WordPress Quirk - May 23rd, 2005
  • We’ve discovered a little WordPress quirk that’s a little bit annoying. Donna and I were both logged into the admin panel, from different machines. I had logged in first. Even though Donna was logged in, and WordPress appeared to recognize Donna on her computer, the system still assigned her first post to me. So, it [...]

  • Faces and Masks - May 23rd, 2005
  • /geren/faces/PICT0012.jpg
During a recent CMPG meeting held at the Gallerie Elan in Ellicott City, I became interested in a display of cast pottery sculpture. Several of these images now grace the photo galleries, filed under “Faces.”
I found the detail and realism in these cast sculptures to be incredible. If it weren’t for the eyes (or lack [...]

  • Brookside Butterflies - May 23rd, 2005
  • At long last…Donna’s gallery of images from the Brookside Gardens Butterfly Show

  • Zoom Wars — Optical v. Digital - May 22nd, 2005
  • I thought I might try an experiment today, and see if the “digital zoom” capability of the DiMAGE A2 was worth messing with. In theory, the 2X digital zoom would give me the equivalent of a 56-400mm lens. I figured the best way to do this would be to pop the camera on the tripod, [...]

  • Matching Vests and Hiking Shoes - May 22nd, 2005
  • Noted nature photographer Timothy Edberg came and spoke at the CMPG meeting last week. The main point of his talk was on lens selection for nature and landscape photography, but he also shared with us some of his thoughts on gear.
In a lot of ways, Tim’s pretty “old school” in his thinking — not that [...]

  • Galleries Updated - May 21st, 2005
  • Several sections have been added to the photo galleries. Most of the images are from the old site, but there are a few new surprises as well. We’ll be adding to the galleries regularly over the next week or two, and regularly after that, so check them often.

  • Goodbye, Old Blog, I Knew Ye Well - May 20th, 2005
  • After a bit of discussion, we have decided to remove the old blog from the site. I’m in the process now of downloading all of the contents and backing up the Movable Type database entries — just in case.
All of the old photographs will be placed in galleries, so, the image content from both the [...]

  • GREEN - May 20th, 2005

Todays Photo Friday challenge is “Green.” This image was made on our recent trip to Brookside Gardens.

  • Real Geeky Wonderfulness - May 19th, 2005
  • I’ve been doing some work today on the web site for the Columbia Lakefront Festival. As you might guess, I decided I’d use WordPress as the platform. It turned out to be an excellent choice.
One important feature I learned about tonight is “scheduling” a post — in other words, creating a post to appear in [...]

  • It’s the New Math - May 19th, 2005
  • Today in TV-land, I directed another hearing on the new plans by the local department on aging. Not real exciting television, but, someone’s got to do it. During teardown, I over heard part of a conversation between two older women, which went something like this:
“…I don’t understand. Years ago, we graduated after eleventh grade, and [...]

  • The colors of things… - May 18th, 2005
  • If you ever decide that you want to paint a wall in you home any color than white, or some shade thereof, think very carefully about that decision. Then, think about it some more. Especially if you’re thinking about a dark color.
First, the color never looks quite like it’s supposed to. I remember my parents [...]

  • State of WordPress - May 17th, 2005
  • I haven’t commented much on the conversion from MovableType to WordPress, except that I did it, it was easy and, so far, I’m pretty happy with WordPress.

There are, however, a couple of things that I haven’t quite got together yet. For instance, under MovableType, I had a great plugin called MTRecentImages. MTRecentImages allowed me to [...]

  • No Runs, No Drips, No Errors… - May 15th, 2005
  • Yesterday, we painted…
Or, more accurately, the band painted. All of the members of the band turned out early yesterday morning to apply paint to the living room, dining room, kitchen, powder room and stairwell of our home. And, we had a good time doing it.
There’s no way for us to properly express our gratitude for [...]

  • Dribbles and Drips - May 13th, 2005
  • For those keeping score, I hate paint.
If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you know that Donna and I are getting married the middle of next month. You may also know that we decided to have the wedding at home. That, of course, means home improvements, most notably painting the entire [...]

  • FLOWERS - May 12th, 2005
  • /geren/brookside/PICT0078.jpg
This week’s Thursday Challenge is “flowers.” I made this image on our recent visit to Brookside Gardens to see the Wings of Fancy butterfly exhibit. More images from the day can be found in the Photo Galleries, or by clicking here.

  • WordPress 1.5.1 Upgrade - May 11th, 2005
  • WordPress 1.5.1 has been released. It is reported to fix over 170 bugs, including one that’s affecting this page — the category sorting. I’m not going to be able to install the upgrade until sometime next week due to the crazyness around the house here, but, it is coming…

  • Read Any Good Books Lately? - May 10th, 2005
  • I’ve known about Project Gutenberg for some time, but never really looked closely at the site. I did get a text copy of Wind in the Willows there sometime back for my old boatbuilding site, but that was about it. I’ve since learned that they have books on just about any topic, and some interesting [...]

  • Wings of Fancy - May 8th, 2005
  • /geren/brookside/PICT0053.jpg
Some of you may remember that a couple of years back, I went with members of the Baltimore Camera Club to Brookside Gardens for their annual butterfly exhibit.
This morning after church, Donna and I decided we needed to “get away” for a photographic expedition. I remembered seeing the signs that the exhibit was returning this [...]

  • It Lives … - May 7th, 2005
  • Well, the computer seems to be back together again, although I fear that there’s something a bit screwy in the old PC. You see, I had everything put nearly to rights yesterday. A nice, new, shiny 80GB hard disk for the primary drive, and the 160GB drive for data. The WindowsXP install was fresh and [...]

  • What’s up in the Garden? - May 5th, 2005
  • It’s been a couple of days since I wrote about the twigs in the back yard, mostly because it’s been a little more hectic than usual. So, by way of update …
Tuesday, I didn’t get a lot done, but did manage to stick the three arborvitae in the ground, alongside the basement stairwell. In looking [...]

  • Not a Good Day in Computerville - May 5th, 2005
  • It is not a good day in the computing lives of Geren & Donna. The last couple of days, I’ve been chasing a lot of spyware/malware on Donna’s computer, which she picked up while perusing music lyric sites. BTW, if you’re a musician, watch those lyric and guitar tab charts!
Anyway, I finally got her machine [...]

  • A Minor Issue - May 3rd, 2005
  • I’m having a minor issue with WordPress, which I’m certain I’ll get figured out sooner or later. The problem is that I can’t get WordPress to sort the categories correctly. By default, it sorts them by the “ID” number assigned when a category is created. I want the categories sorted by name. I’ve what I’ve [...]

  • It’s a First! - May 3rd, 2005
  • This morning after breakfast, Donna and I were discussing my plan for the afternoon, which consists largely of planting three arborvitea and a couple of willow trees. She asked where I was going to put them, aside from “in the ground.”
As I described what I thought we had agreed upon — arborvitae alongside the basement [...]

  • Twig One and Twig Two - May 2nd, 2005
  • The planting has begun. After yet another trip to local big orange box home improvement emporium this afternoon (this time, it was for the wheel barrow that wouldn’t fit in the car last night), I stuck the two trees in the ground, along the back property line of our lot — just in time for [...]

  • It’s a Jungle in There! - May 1st, 2005
  • /random/100_6355web.jpg
So, you’re thinking, “Why would people with a minivan stuff a garden into the back of a little blue Cavalier coupe?”
It’s a long story… and I’m too damned tired to type it. Let’s just say that the van is full of something else right now.

(Cool! We figured out how to do extended entries! )
    Anyway, [...]
