Should it Stay or Should it Go?

In two-and-one-half weeks, the hosting contract for gerenm.net is again up for renewal. And again this year, as in years past, I have to ask myself, is this really worth it to me, and to any readers that may be out there.

Obviously, we’ve had little time to write latetly. What we have written recently has received surprisingly little comment. I’m not even sure it’s being viewed. Sure, I get lots of comment spam — mostly automated junk trying to push online casino and gambling sites (what the heck is Texas Holdem, anyway), the latest hyped up medications on line, online dating and porn, and the rest of the usual assortment of questionable sources for top software titles cheap. While the comment spam elimition software here catches it pretty well, I’m getting tired of fighting it.

So, what to do?

There are many projects that require our attention: books we want to author, business ventures, musical endeavors, at least one fairly large photographic book project I’ve been contracted for (I saw some of the proofs with the place-holder images a couple of days ago, and I’m really psyched for this), classes we want to take … the list goes on.

Of course, all of this could be really fun stuff to write (and read) about. And so, you see my quandary. The biggest question is, if we write it, will you come? You have to let us know, by using the comment link for this post.

I check on all our group’s sites pretty much on a daily basis. If you write it, and it’s interesting, I’ll read it.

Re: comment spam and the rest - there’s no such thing as a zero-admin system unless you run it completely closed. Remember the old BBS days?

Then again, if the question of devoting time to it keeps coming up, maybe it is appropriate to call it quits. Remember that “focus” thing? If you keep making more projects that require time and effort, the less likely that any one of them will receive the care they demand.

I’d recommend taking true stock in your activities - what really has a benefit, and what just sucks time.

Rob,

There are about 5 people that I know read regularly. We could just as easily keep them informed of what occurs around here, and our thoughts and musings and images, via an e-mail list.

The truth is, I enjoy working with the site. I get to play with neat stuff and learn something on occasion. And, time is not really the concern in this particular case. It’s really whether or not we’re doing this for an audience, or just for ourselves and a few friends. If it’s the latter, there are other avenues for that.

Geren,

I check out your site almost every day and enjoy reading what you have to say. I also check out Rob’s, Lynn’s and Will’s. Along with others of interest. I’m always learning something from them. One of these days I’ll put one of my own sites together if I ever have the time.

I’m with you! You’re interesting! But, don’t do anything that’s not fun for you.
