This looks cool, if you’re wanting to create podcasts, but don’t have the equipment or time to do it the old-fashioned way. Talkr will produce podcasts from your blog’s RSS feed, using an automated text-to-speech process. Cool.
[UPDATE: I've tried adding "Listen to this article" links for the Talkr service, however, the files that result from [...]
I ran a roll of film though the Nikon FM10 I picked up on eBay for Donna. The camera was a bargain — body and a Nikkor 35-70mm zoom for $49.99 plus shipping. For the purposes of the test, I used only the 35-70 that came with the camera. Anyway, I ran an old roll [...]
For some of you, this will be a rebroadcast of an earlier e-mail…
Hey, everyone. I just wanted to let you all know that Donna has accepted
a new job, and will be leaving the crazy train house in two weeks. The
best part is that she had several options to choose from.
Effective August 10, Donna will be [...]
So, Donna mentioned to me this morning that she had told a friend last night that she and I were doing something “dedicatedly.” She then began to doubt if it was actually a word. Well, hon, according to Webster, it’s the adverb form of dedicated:
Main Entry: ded·i·cat·ed
Function: adjective
1 : devoted to a cause, ideal, or [...]
Well, after two-and-one-half years, and a bazillion dollars, NASA’s no closer to solving its launch problems. Once again, bits of foam insulation fell off the Space Shuttle’s external fuel tank during the initial phases of launch. Subsequently, the shuttle program is again grounded indefinately.
Quite frankly, even though the thing is as impressive as hell, it’s [...]
I’d heard of Picasa before, but never played with it. I’d even downloaded it when Google announced it, but never installed it. Last night, after an e-mail conversation with Rob about how poor some of the other solutions I’d tried are, I decided to give Picasa a try. I downloaded the newest version, and ran [...]
We decided that keeping the site up is worthwhile. It seems that there are at least a couple of folks who hang our every word. And, it seems that part of the reason I’m not seeing a lot of actual visits to the site is that some folks are picking up the RSS feed. So, [...]
As promised, here are a few images from this past Sunday…

I think I finally figured out the whole moving water thing. Now, this is not a stellar photograph, by any stretch of the imagination. But, I did figure out a recipe for making those silky-water waterfall pictures. Of course, this is from the A2. (There [...]
The point of all this is that I’ve got plenty of options, and the experimentation phase will be interesting and educational.

Discovery’s launch was on time and picture perfect! Go NASA!

I’ve always wondered why our calendar works the way it does (I wonder about a lot of things that don’t really matter, by the way). This morning, I stumbled upon this link: http://linkster.port5.com/#calendar. Must read and learn more.
So, why is dish called a dish? And who decided that the same word we use for tableware [...]
I’ve had something of an epiphany.
In looking back over some of the thousands of pictures I’ve taken over the last 25 or so years, I’ve got to say that my best work was done years ago with a Canon AT-1. The AT-1 was a fully manual camera — no autofocus and no fancy exposure modes. [...]
In some research I’ve been doing, I’ve come across this great resource for information on older Nikon cameras.
More to follow in a later post, sometime over the weekend…

Imagine being able to take your PC with you anywhere, with full wireless networking, built-in, and printing out your thoughts by simply touching a printer! Then imagine being able to do that without carrying any hardware. This is the stuff of science fiction come to life!

… a trumpet with a violin?
Well, you get a trumpet violin, of course!
The bell is a trumpet bell fitted to a violin neck with a small resonator cone. Instruments like this were used in classical acoustical recordings early in the 20th century. The on pictured is handmade in Rumania. The thing sounds like a cross [...]

While the StealthSurfer II [review] is a really cool device for all of the private internet access capabilities it provides, to me, the neatest thing is that my entire internet experience — favorites, cookies, e-mail setups and private folders, etc. — could be made portable and secure, available to me wherever I [...]
In two-and-one-half weeks, the hosting contract for gerenm.net is again up for renewal. And again this year, as in years past, I have to ask myself, is this really worth it to me, and to any readers that may be out there.
Obviously, we’ve had little time to write latetly. What we have written recently [...]
As we promised, our honeymoon pictures are up, late on Sunday. Okay, it was very late on Sunday. Or, very early on Monday. But, they’re up. You can find them in the Gallery, or clicky clicky here. There are a lot of images involved, so the page takes a few minutes to load.

I caught a little bit of the Live8 rebroadcast on VH-1 today. I came in somewhere toward the end of The Who’s set,
and caught all of Pink Floyd’s set. You know, for a bunch of old guys, these guys sure can kick some musical butt!
They even looked like they were having a heck of [...]
I found out today that it is again legal for auto insurance companies to use your credit score as part of their rating process. They seem to believe that if your credit score is low, you have a higher chance of getting into an accident, speeding, or otherwise needing to file a claim.
B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T
Plain and simple.
For [...]
At long last, we have pictures of the wedding posted. Most of these were taken by my father, and a few by Rob. They’re a sequential collection of shots taken throughout the afternoon. You can find the pictures in the Photo Galleries, under “Wedding Day“.

Twice over the long holiday weekend, I had opportunities to challenge the inappropriate actions of total strangers, and I actually did.
On the 4th, as we were crossing the bridge over the bay between the west OC park-n-ride to the inlet area, a young woman was riding her bike in the walkway. The polite [...]
Someone commented a couple of days ago that some of the internal site links were redirecting them to the FBI’s internet fraud division web site. Ooops. It seems that the page file name found a partial match in my referrer spam blocking setup. That should all be fixed now. Ah, the joys of having a [...]

Here’s a story I’ll be watching closely. The short of it is that a photographer is being sued for publishing a photograph taken of a person in a public place. As Rob stated, “it’s been a matter of precedent that one has no expectation of privacy when in a public place, and that any [...]
