Galleries … an Update
Thanks to some great help from Brian and “Ozgreg” at the WPG2 support forum, Gallery2 RC2 is now fully integrated into Blather de la Semaine. As it turns out, I probably could have retained the previous theme templates, but, that’s okay. Maybe, if I get the urge, I’ll switch back sometime down the road.
Of course, there will still be some tweaking to do, but, it’s relatively minor stuff, like getting the thumbnails working the way I want, and adjusting text colors, and still there’s the issue of embedding Gallery images into blog entries easily. Nothing that can’t be done in some minor CSS tweaking.
A few comments about Gallery and the WPG2 plug-in. The version I’m using is not yet the final version 2 release, though, if all goes as planned, there will be very few changes between this “release candidate” and the final distribution. WPG2 is also near its final release stage. As I’ve mentioned to the developer, there is one feature I’d like to see added, though I have no idea whether or not it will make it into the program.
Gallery is a very powerful and flexible online image gallery system that lends itself quite nicely to online “community” sharing of images. By itself, it is very easy to setup and administer, and, once running, it works well and makes sense.
WPG2 is a little more confusing. Actually, it’s not WPG2 that had to too confused, but, rather, the interactions between Gallery2, WPG2 and WordPress. It was not sinking in with me that the themes are not shared between WordPress and Gallery2 through the WPG2 plugin. I thought that was a part of the purpose of the WPG2 plugin. Apparently, it’s not. Once I overcame that hurdle, and got a good theme for the gallery itself, it’s become pretty smooth sailing. As I mentioned above, it’s now just time to go back and tweak a few items … Oh, yeah, and getting the images all moved over from the old galleries.
