Over-reliance on Computers

Last night, I went to the local Advance Auto Parts store to pick up a battery charger for a client. As I entered the store, I was told that their computers were down and their internet connection was problematic. I priced my item, though, so that I could go ahead and invoice it to my client this morning. And, I was assured that the store would be open for business as usual at 7:30 this morning.

This morning, I left the house early and arrived at the store before 8AM. Upon entering, I was informed, “Cash only.”

It seems that their computers are still down, as is their internet connection. They have to hand write every sale until the computers are working. But, they have no backup plan for accepting charge or debit cards.

I’m guessing that their phones must be dead, too, because, as far as I know, every credit card clearing house still has a telephone/voice method of credit card approval.

The fact of the matter is that, as a society, we’ve become far to reliant upon computers to handle our daily business.

That’s just ridiculous.
