Crab Shanty = Crap Shanty

Yesterday, I went to a luncheon at the Crab Shanty in Ellicott City, MD. The Crab Shanty is, allegedly, one of the better seafood restaurants in town. I will not be going back.

As we went as a group, and had limited time because of working schedules, we pre-ordered our food last week. Still, nothing had been pre-prepared. The wait for food was nearly 40 minutes. The food for our guest of honor was repeatedly forgotten (salad, then entree!). Drink orders were mixed up repeatedly, and the server was rather inattentive.

When the food finally did arrive, the portions were, in most cases, meager at best. I ordered blacked catfish. It came as two strips of fish, barely making up one small filet. Also on the plate was a single corn fritter and a sprig of parsely. For this, I paid, including the forced 18% tip, $15.

What a rip-off!

Ooooo… if only you had asked, I coulda told you that. Crab Shanty is only considered to be a good seafood restaurant by the Red Lobster blue-hair crowd who like their fried clam baskets with extra cocktail sauce to drown the flavor of rancid oil and past-date fish. I have never been satisfied when eating there. Unfortunately, I don’t know anybody on the west side of town that really does seafood well (er… cooked seafood, that is), at least as their primary focus of their menu.

Frankly, the best fish dishes I’ve had out our way have been coming from the Mexican place on Main Street in EC.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have a choice in the matter. It was one of those, “we’re having a going-away lunch for {insert name here} at Crab Shanty. Be there at noon” kinda things.

My ~12-person dinner group had the same problem at Kelsey’s in EC last night. The food was good ONCE IT ARRIVED. We ordered at 6:15, and didn’t get our meals until 6:55. INSANE! Of course, with a large group they tack on that mandatory 18% tip. I have no idea how they can justify that, since the service wasn’t worth 18-cents. It’s as if the cooks know they get the tip guaranteed, then say to themselves, ’so why bother?’
