More Picasa Kudos

I’ve been extolling the virtues of Google’s Picasa software for some time now. Here’s another good and interesting feature. I’ve mentioned that Picasa includes a not-half-bad image editor, with some pretty nice features. What I hadn’t realized until recently is that changes made in Picasa are non-destructive, leaving the original file untouched for use in “serious” software, like Photoshop.

We’ve also found a bit of a bug here, too. It seems that if a directory is not write enabled, Picasa gives no indication. It acts as if the disk operation is complete, but the file is not written.

This image of singer/songwriter Bob Sima (lead vocalist and guitar player for Stereopool), was affected completely in Picasa. I used the “Filtered Black and White” tool to emulate black and white film shot with a red filter, and the “Soft Focus” tool, centered on Bob’s face, to effectively decrease depth of field such that only his face is in sharp focus.

More images from Bob’s photo shoot can be seen here.
