Need aNother New Nikon Now?
In just under three weeks, and hot on the heels of the D2Xs, Nikon will unveil another new D-SLR, suspected to be something of a “D80/90″, whatever exactly that is. Some of you may remember that we’ve just bought a pair of D70s’s.
This, of course, has happened to me before. I bought the Minolta DiMage A1, and three weeks later, there was the A2, which boasted a 3MP bump in the sensor (A1 was 5MP, A2 was 8MP). This time, the bump will be about 4MP.
As usual, details from Nikon are sketchy. The quotes are:
More Power
More Control
More Versatile
More Excitement
New 10.2MP D-SLR Addition to the Line-up
Integrating Quality and Affordability to Meet the Demands of Passionate Photo Enthusiasts
So, the question remains — Do I regret having just bought two 6MP D-SLR bodies, only to have them “one-upped” again”? Of course not. Will I want to upgrade in the future? Of course. That’s the nature of things. I’m sure that, at some point, we’ll end up with a pair of the new cameras, and keep our D70s’s for backups.
For now, the D70s’s make wonderful images, and will continue to for some time (just as the old Minolta DiMage A1 still makes a very nice picture!). I’m looking forward to making many, many photographs with my D70s. And, I know Donna feels the same way. Unlike many, we don’t need to have the latest, greatest gizmo to be happy. We’d prefer to learn to get the most out of the equipment we have, and continue to use it until we truly grow beyond its capabilities. And, with the D70s, we’ve still got quite a way to go.

NOOOOOooooooooooo!!!!!
I want the LATEST & GREATEST!!!!!
Gee, can we get one of the new ones, then we can shoot events w/2 lenses ready to go?
Then get out your credit card and run over to Penn and order ‘em up right now! I don’t wanna be waiting like those poor D200 slobs!
I believe I mentioned something a while back about an 18-month obsolescence window. You don’t have a camera - you have a computer with a lens. Welcome to the computer upgrade cycle.
Nikon tends to have two cycles — the 18-month schedule for the pro-sumer level D-SLRs, and a bit longer in the pro market.
But hey, I manage to keep my computers working for years — somehow! The old Athlon is still chugging away quite happily as a file and print server.
