Damn, I’m fast. Donna’s photo log site is up, too, though there’s not much there as yet … she has to tag her flickr images appropriately so they’ll propogate into the site.

Geren’s Photolog / Photo Blog has been moved to it’s own page. You can see it here. There’s still a bit of tweaking to do, both here and on the photo blog site. Once I’m done with that, I’ll also switch Donna’s over to an identicle configuration. We won’t stop posting pictures here, but there [...]
Okay, no one can complain that this is hard to read. There are some things broken and missing … temporarily. And, I have to replace all the header pictures with ones that Donna and I have taken. But don’t tell me it’s hard to read.

I received a note, via the contact form on the site, from my old friend Mike Morucci reminding me of the my 25th high school reunion that I’m not going to be able to attend. I was happy to hear from Mike, even though the note was specifically about the reunion. Anyway, it turns out [...]

Regular CMPG meeting. See http://www.cmpg.org for details.

A few days ago, I posted a poll soliciting your input regarding the appearance of this site. Well, my seven known readers have all responded (well, there are seven responses, anyway). If I average the results, the general gist is that the worst bit about the site is the color scheme. The shades-of-gray-text on a [...]
Paris Hilton may have been charged with driving drunk, but the someone at ABC appears to be a little tipsy at the keyboard!
[link to article]
Not only is it mistyped in the headline, but in the article body as well!
The reality is that this is a typo. However, it’s also sloppy reporting. [...]
I’m reading an interview with Phil Ramone (musician, producer and engineer) in which he’s asked what a good recording is. His response:
“I think it’s important to stop worrying about the technology and make sure that you capture the event in its primary state.”
Later in the interview, he says,
“I think you can never, ever fix a [...]
Of course, this blog is not exactly a democracy. That said, some folks have commented to me recently that they dislike the current design. So, here’s your chance to sound off a little bit, and answer the poll below.

HamdenFest 2006
Uploaded by gerenm.
The rest of my images from the Baltimore flickr Show at Hampdenfest 2006 have been uploaded. I was trying to do it during the day yesterday — from Hamdenfest — but the battery in the laptop died on me about half-way through the day. Anyway, my pics can be found here.
More pictures [...]
Hamdenfest, originally uploaded by gerenm.
Taken during setup of the Baltimore Flickr Show booth at Hampdenfest this morning, and posted from event. Wireless is so cool!

The new refrigerator is supposed to be delivered tomorrow.
The guy is coming to do the detailed measurements of the windows on Monday.
Also on Monday… we might know what’s wrong with the cat who was taken to the vet today. Our 16lb 3oz big-guy is losing his fur - skin and all. yuk! the condition started [...]
When lighting for photography, it is sometimes desirable to change the color of the light being used. For “hot lights,” this is relatively easy using affordable, commercially available colored “gels.” However, for “speedlights,” the commercial offerings are rather expensive - an 8-gel set for a Nikon SB-800 is almost U$20 at discount!
So, how’s a multitude [...]
Tonight, I’m pulling about the most least exciting shifts in TV-land I’ve ever pulled. It’s primary election time, and we’re “airing” the results “live.” This means that I’ve tied a laptop into our master control automation system, and someone from our Public Information Office is loading data files into an MS Access database, and using [...]
If you’re last name is Cane (or Kane, or Caine or anything like that), and you have a daughter, please don’t name her Candy…

Geren & Donna visit the ren fest…
And lots of pictures were taken. Some of Geren’s may be found here (more to follow added 9/11/06). We’ll get Donna’s uploaded to her flickr site as soon as possible.
Donna also got some really nice new garb at the fest this year. You can look forward to seeing pictures [...]
Yeah, it’s another guitar-looking thing. But, this one’s pretty bizzarre. It’s a 12-string bass guitar. Leave it to those crazy Mexicans (Mexicanos locos)! More info…

No, not Christmas…
ELECTION.
Today alone, we received FOUR calls from campaign offices.
Two of the callers were recorded messages.
The other two callers actually had a pulse.
Regardless, very annoying!
If we don’t answer the phone when you call, then you might want to just send us an email, as we’re likely to stop answering the phone until after polls [...]
After getting quite close to having bills under very tight control, we’ve had to bite the bullet to make some major upgrades here at the house:
new heat pump (the current system is some 22 years old, only 1/2 the efficiency of current models, and, most importantly, limping along and never quite sure if it’ll [...]

Over at The Digital Grin, there’s an excellent article on getting skin tones right on digital printing.

Back in March, I reported on a new web site, called Blurb, that would allow you to publish your own book. At that point, there was really nothing there but a pipe dream. It seems that now the service is, indeed, in operation, if only in beta. Most interesting!

Ever since the RIAA started taking on file sharing, it’s always acted as if it were entitled to all sorts of things it isn’t: access to the names associated with IP addresses without filing lawsuits, private info on the people they’re suing and even the aid of the FBI in what’s clearly a civil, not [...]
In a time when the RIAA and MPAA are rewriting copyright laws in their strong-arm advertising and trying to shut down anything with a download link, MySpace intends to offer its members a venue to sell their own music on line through their MySpace web sites. Bravo!

CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the ebullient Australian whose catch cry of “Crikey!” helped him rise to global fame as television’s the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray while filming on the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.
Irwin was in the water at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, [...]
I wrote previously that there was no built-in flickr integration for Windows Live Writer. However, the Windows Live Writer Plugins site has a couple of excellent plugins available.

I’ve heard of all kinds of guitars — bass, electric, steel-string, nylon-string, cigar box — you name it! But, I’d never heard of a tenor guitar. Interestingly, it’s only a 4-string instrument. Standard tunings are CGDA or DGBE, or for Irish tuning, use GDAE. A standard six-string guitar is tuned EADGBE (more guitar tunings here). [...]
It seems that some colleges are making depression – and seeking treatment for the condition – the subject of disciplinary action.
At the same time, there may be a disconnect between receiving treatment via antidepressants and receiving useful therapy as patients adjust to new medications.

Donna just brought me a newspaper article about a weekly vinyl event, where collectors gather to swap their wares. No, I’m not talking about lingerie, but I’m guessing the picture got your attention! Perverts!
I’m talking about record albums. LP’s. You know, those thin, round, black things we used to put on a turntable or record [...]
This is a test using multiple images from my local hard drive, uploaded directly to the site via FTP (in theory).
Other people have reported difficulty in uploading multiple images to a weblog. I’m guessing, since it worked fine here, that they had a setting out of whack. It doesn’t work via the “upload [...]

I’m still fooling with Live Writer, and in many ways, it’s really excellent. These images were all dragged in from my flickr space, though links don’t work at present. I’m sure that will come in a later version. Anyway, this layout was done entirely with the Live Writer program, making quick photo album page [...]
So, I’m playing with a new blog authoring program called Windows Live Writer. It’s got some pretty cool features, such as drag-n-drop image placement (the image at left was simply dragged in from Adobe Lightroom).
It also is a more-or-less WSIWYG editor — I even seen the post using the page style as I’m typing the [...]
On January 13th, 2007 CMPG offers their first half-day seminar and workshop open to the public. The Guild presents photojournalist David Hobby, who will be offering a program designed to educate the intermediate to advanced shooter on the uses of multi-strobe off-camera lighting.
Parties who book a reservation prior to September 30th get a 10% Early [...]
