Birds!
We have a bird feeder in our backyard. It was quite a project that Geren had to go through to get the thing hung up where it woudl be both sturdily supported (it holds up to 10lbs of seed) and in our range of sight from the kitchen table.
Three weeks and a fortune in bird seed later, it’s a great success! A few days ago we were graced with the presence of a beautiful woodpecker (no, i don’t know what type) and tonight we saw a (house?) wren. We’ve had a few cardinals, a few doves, more sparrows, and several of some kind of little brown guy with a long thin red throat and upper chest and more red on the lower body above the tail feathers, which only shows when the wings are in motion. Haven’t tried to figure out what these little guys are, but they sure are busy. so am i. i have been highly entertained by all the activity.
as have two of the cats. Smokey sits in front the door and literally trembles. he tries to meow and comes out with some kind of a squeak that also vibrates from his trembling. i think he’d love to have a little snack! (btw, he’s still having the balding problem, and feels sweaty as heck. he goes back to the vet on Monday morning and hopefully we’ll know what to do with him next. he’s begun some bad non-litter-pan habits, which the vet said could be related to the stress of whatever he’s sick from. not as likely that it would be caused by the elevated liver enzymes. his kidney levels were checked before, too, and they were fine.)
Darjha is interested in all the motion. He doesn’t tremble as much as Smokey, but he does try to follow every move of every bird out there. which is comical because there’s no way he can keep up with them when they get to flitting!

Nice pics, Donna.
[...] After watching the wren more closely, I’ve determined by the white stripes on his face that he’s a Carolina Wren, not a house wren as previously thought. The two are very different but now that I’ve got a bird book (thanks again, Geren!) it’s easier to know what to look for as I’m watching the little guys twittering around the feeder. Plus, I got a really good look at him today. He spent a great deal of time trying to perch on the springs underneath our bicycle seats. It’s a cramped, dark space under a bike seat, so I’ve asked the hub for a birdhouse for Christmas. (Despite the name, Carolina Wrens are residents up here even through the wintertime.)
