Home Sweet Home — Fishy-Style

The aquarium’s set up, in it’s home on the dresser in our bedroom. We’ve got to wait a couple of days before we can put any fish in it — there’s chemistry to do to make water that’s fit for humans fit for fish. In other words, we’ve got to undo all the good things that the City of Baltimore does to water to make it potable. I’ll start taking readings of the water tomorrow afternoon, and get whatever chemicals I need to start to bring things into line.

We’re also going to “sleep on” having it in the bedroom another night. It makes all kinds of noises now — humming of pumps and motors, and bubbly-gurgly noises. I doubt they’ll keep us awake, but, I want to be sure. Easier to move it now, before it’s “inhabited” (although, it’s still a PITA to have to siphon 25 gallons of water out the window if this location doesn’t work out!).

A gallon of water is 8 pounds (”A pint’s a pound the world ’round”), so you’ve got the weight of the aquarium plus about 200 lbs. of liquid. Ya know, I think there’s a reason that aquarium stands are made from heavy-gauge steel stock. ;)

The other thing you may want to take into consideration (having learned from wifely experience) is: “What gets ruined when this thing leaks?” I don’t think y’all want it to be your dresser and your clothes.

Actually, most of the modern stands aren’t made as well as this dresser is — even the steel ones! But, believe me, I did a full leak test before I put the tank on the dresser!

That said, I am going to have to make some adjustments. There’s a little sag in the dresser that the aquarium … aggravates.
