Kat Kaput

Not to be confused with Cat Caput*.

We lost a Cory Cat last night. I was adjusting the PH in the tank, and the little bugger chomped on a mouthful of dry chemistry. It was obvious right off that he didn’t like it, as he barrel-rolled from the bottom of the tank, clear to the top, and back down again, and then sputtered around the bottom for a few minutes. About 10 minutes later, he’d expired.

Everyone else in the tank seems just fine … so far. A couple of the Tiger Barbs grabbed mouthfuls of the chemical, too, but they spit it out right away. I guess they’re marginally smarter than the catfish was.

Lesson learned: next time I need to add this particular chemical to the tank, pre-mix it with water, so I’m adding a liquid instead of dry.

* caput - [kap-uht]
-noun
1. a head-like protuberance on an organ or structure; “the caput humeri is the head of the humerus which fits into a cavity in the scapula”  2. the upper part of the human body or the front part of the body in animals; contains the face and brains; “he stuck his head out the window” [syn: head]
