Sudden Cold Brings New Bird

The sudden cold has brought a new species of bird to our feeders. These fellows are Brown Headed Cowbirds.

The Cowbirds usually eat insects — they originally followed herds of Bison to eat the insect they attracted. Now that it’s gotten really cold (for here), they’re looking for alternative eats.

Also spotted this morning was one of our regular visitors, the House Wren Finch.

I apologize for the exposure on these pictures, but they were quick grabs. In the mornings, our feeders are strongly back-lit. As the sun comes up, if the Cowbirds are still around, I’ll try to get some better pictures.

oopsies…the red-headed guy is a house finch (not wren) I guess there was too much lag time between our bird-watching session and your blogging time!
