Bird report

While in the Jamestowne historic areas, we watched:

  • two Brown-headed Nuthatches hollowing a new nest out of a dead tree
  • two Red-headed Woodpeckers, also working on new nests
  • one adult Double-crested Cormorant chowing on a huge catfish (which it ate from the inside out) and one juvenile (who swallowed his smaller fish whole)
  • one BANK SWALLOW
  • Bald Eagle in its nest
  • Great Blue Heron searching for lunch
  • Egret (specific type TBD)
  • plus lots of red-winged blackbirds, sparrows and such as we have here at home.

In all, it was a well-rounded trip with history and some great birding, which I hadn’t really expected. Will post pictures of the woodpeckers and cormorants later.

ADDENDUM: We also saw a Northern Flicker (see Geren’s previous post) and I finally saw a Bluebird for the first time!

Don’t forget the Northern Flicker I posted the other day. Also, if that Egret was pure white, it was a Snowy Egret.
