Another Canon for our Arsenal

We made an excursion to see our friend Don at Penn Camera today, with the idea of getting Donna switched over to a Canon before our heavy (?) wedding schedule starts. The plan was to put Donna’s hands on everything — and mine, too — to develop a little bit of a strategy for future purchases. We went back to decided which camera felt better in our hands, the 30D or the XTi, and back to playing with lenses, etc. After quite some time (I’m thinking a couple of hours!) Donna came away with:

  • rebel_xti_586x225 Canon EOS Rebel XTi black body
  • Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens
  • Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens
  • Canon Speedlight 580EX-II
  • Off-camera flash cable
  • Remote shutter release
  • Extra battery

Donna did not get the vertical grip, which surprised me a little bit, as I knew she was concerned about the camera feeling too small. She’s been fooling with the camera for a couple of hours, and really likes how Canon have put all the important things at her finger tips, where some were buried in menus on the D70s.

Did I mention that we put our hands on a lot of kit today? Don is a very patient man (as is everyone at Penn). He happily paraded every conceivable combination of lenses past us before Donna decided on the Canon long lens. It’s a sweet lens, and, I have to tell you, I’m a little jealous. I kinda wish I’d've bought one when I got the 75-300.

But, I digress … One of the lenses we tried was the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens. That lens is the absolute shiznit! I have got to have one of those! Yeah, it’s big and bulky and heavy and biege. But, it is fast, fast, fast! and bright. Wow! No, we didn’t buy it today, but I’m here to tell you that we’re gonna!

Donna’s going to start getting used to her new gear tonight. We’re going to a house party where Bob Sima and Krista Detor will be playing. We hadn’t planned on taking cameras, but, it’s a good chance to put the 70-300 through its paces, and an opportunity for Donna to start getting accustomed to “the Canon way.”

I’ve been considering turning in my d70 for a younger sexier model. What sort of things were at fingertips that you had to dig for on the d70? I’m not too familiar with the Canon, in general, and am curious what features made you switch.

One item that comes immediately to mind is AF mode. There were a few other little things that I use frequently that are in menues on the D70s that are right on the back panel of the Canon.

I would say that, if you have a lot of good lenses for the Nikon, get a newer, better Nikon — unless you’re shooting a lot of stuff with the ISO cranked up above 400. Then, take a look at either a Canon or the Fuji S5.

Interesting. I appreciate that info. I’m not that committed on lenses yet, I’ve been using (relatively) low-cost Tamrons. I must admit the 5D looks really, really interesting.
