For those interested, the little Gray Cockatiel pictured on the site the other day is now happily perched on the top of my laptop screen, watching me type.
We don’t have a name yet, and we haven’t a clue whether it’s a little boy bird, or a little girl bird. But, it was hand fed, so, [...]

Thanks to the great support desk at ICDSoft, my problem using Windows Live Writer has been resolved. Seems that they’ve seen a wave of exploits against sites that use the method of updating that WLW and WordPress use to exchange site information, so, they simply blocked all access to the files on their servers. They’re [...]
We went to the usual pet emporium to pick up some cat food for Darjha, because he’s become a finicky eater all of the sudden, and some chemicals for the aquarium.
As usual, we looked at the other critters they generally have around — cats for adoption, fish, rodentia and birds. This one, a which [...]
I mentioned yesterday that we bought Donna all new kit, as far as photo gear goes. The most amazing piece of all that stuff is the Canon 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 IS USM lens. The key to all it’s photographic goodness are those two little letters, IS. Working with that lens allowed both of us to get [...]
We’ve been using Windows Live Writer for posting to the web site, and I, at least, really like the way it works. Or rather, worked. For some reason, we’ve suddenly started getting a “(403) Forbidden” error when trying to post to the site. What I don’t remember is whether or not I’ve posted using Live [...]
Created with Paul’s flickrSLiDR.
I just found this really cool flickr slide show inserter called flickrslidr. All ya gotta do is go to the site, fill in the requested information, click the button, and copy-n-paste the provided code. What could be easier?!?

We made an excursion to see our friend Don at Penn Camera today, with the idea of getting Donna switched over to a Canon before our heavy (?) wedding schedule starts. The plan was to put Donna’s hands on everything — and mine, too — to develop a little bit of a strategy for future [...]

Those of you who’ve known me a while know that, for a long time, I’ve been fascinated by an instrument called a Chapman Stick. Well, check out this guy:

And, he’s got a web site here: http://andymckee.com/

Friday, we went to see our friends Bob Sima, Krista Detor and David Weber play at the Hunt Valley Town Center. All things considered, the show was pretty good — certainly the performces were great! The sound, however, was pretty grim. Still, a fun time was had by all. More pictures are on my [...]

This guy is good! Even Simon says so!
But wait! There’s more!

I went over to that big box store that’s all blue with the yellow price-tag-shaped sign today, with the idea of buying a DVD Recorder. What I really want is something that will record either a true DV digital signal, or at least component. However, that’ll cost me a grand or more, and that’s just [...]
Apple have release a beta version of the Safari web browser for Windows XP and Vista. While some say that it’s buggy, it is, after all, beta software. What do you expect? Apple expect to have all the little kinks worked out before the slated official release in October.
Being the Apple slut that I [...]
[UPDATE: Well, that sure was fast! The guys (a couple of nutcases!) from Verizon showed up around 8:45 or so, and by 10:45, they were gone. In that short time, they hooked up and initialized four STBs (1 HD/DVR, 3 SD) and a wireless internet router. And, our telephones still work! I'm impressed!]
FiOS comes today. [...]
fibromyalgia: it stinks.
i’m exhausted today. just getting dinner was a challenge, mostly because i sat down too long after i got home. if i keep moving after work, i can usually keep going for a few more hours just in auto-pilot mode. but if i sit down? it’s all over. i have time to realize [...]
As promised, I’ve uploaded a batch of my pictures from Deanna’s show last night at Lakefest to my flickr stream.
Enjoy!

It’s been pretty much a musical weekend, all the way ’round. Friday night, we went to Mad City Coffee to see our friend Bob Sima. While we were there, I thought I might fool around a bit with the little Casio camera’s “movie” mode.
The results, while not exactly ready for broadcast television, are really much, much better than [...]
I went into Photoshop and tweaked up one of the birdie pictures from yesterday — a little more sharpening, a little more color balance, etc.
The original posted image was processed in Lightroom, and some of the controls in that program are much more subtle (and maybe a little more refined) than those in Photoshop [...]
I may be getting the hang of this digiscoping setup. With the Casio, I’m able to get images that are consistently good enough for posting to web sites, and I’ve made a few that are printable, if only to 4×6. One thing that is bugging me, though, is that focus appears to shift a little [...]
Okay, this is some funky video I made of the birdies at the feeder, through the spotting scope, using the little Casio digicam as a video recorder [NOTE: the quality was much better before YouTube got a hold of it! It looks fantastic on DVD!]. This is just too slick…

As I mentioned a few days ago, I dropped and broke my little cheapie point-n-shoot digital camera. It really wasn’t worth repairing, even though I did really like it. Because of that, I’ve been in the market for a nice little point-n-shoot that would make a nice picture, and that may even work well [...]
Certain things have been catching my attention, and they happen to be things that make me think we’ve gone really wrong as a culture. Here are just two of them:
1. The latest ad campaign at The Mall in Columbia consists of large banners on which are listed the names of three or four stores. Each banner [...]
European Starlings are fascinating birds, even though they are considered to be “pest” birds. Here, a mother feeds her young chick (?) on our deck rail, after having pecked a little bit from one of our suet feeders. A lot of racket and huffing and puffing on the part of the young’n led up to [...]
So, you’re wondering what’s up with this whole digiscoping thing I’ve been muttering about. Here’s the scoop (or, is that scope?) so far: Saturday, I picked up an Alpen 15-45X60 spotting scope, and the Alpen universal adaptermabob to use with a digital camera, as well as a proper cable release and a Canon 50mm f/1.8 [...]
Here’s a neat exercise in lighting. As I mentioned earlier this morning, I had a studio portrait session with a bassist who’s moving to a new area, and wanted photographs for his promo package. Of course, we did the standard “head shots” for his glossies. But, we also decided to do some “action” shots.
The first [...]
We made this portrait last night — late! — using only two monolights and a reflector. In all honesty, I could have used a third light, but at the moment, I don’t have one that I can easily slave to with the Alien Bees B400s.
Believe it or not, as nice as the Nikon SB800, [...]
