Choices

Got some lab results today.  Slightly elevated bad cholesterol, slightly elevated blood pressure, low iron, and instructions from the doctor to go on: 1.  A DIET!  (who does he think he is, huh??? i’m barely overweight and have lost 7-8lbs in the past six weeks–without even trying, that’s the good part)  2.  A LOW-SALT DIET  3. A LOW-CHOLESTEROL DIET.

wow.  it’s almost as if i’d been reading my mom’s lab results.  is this where that other part of the ‘mother’s curse’ comes true?  not the one about kids, but the one that goes something like “you wait…someday when you’re over forty…!”

and today another doctor informed me i’m dehydrated.

Anyway, i’m choosing for now to forget the low-salt, low-cholesterol biz.

I can only do one thing at a time, and right now it has to be gluten-free.  well, maybe two things:  gluten-free, and lots of water.

You poor thing. It’s definitely getting easier to get gluten-free baked goods at the local coffee shops.

yah! even Giant and Safeway are carrying some of the same gluten-free brands as places like David’s Natural Market. it’s not been as difficult as I expected, especially now that i’ve found some good pasta! brown rice pasta — even Geren likes it!

That’s good.
Getting enough fluids should help a bit with your fatigue, too.

yah, i know. i felt better on vacation, when i usually started my day with orange juice and water.
water’s SOOOOOOOOOOOO boring, tho! and i can’t have sodas — not even decaf — so i’m left w/choices whose ingredients labels start with “high fructose corn syrup”!

i know. i’m just whining now!

the dr’s office doing the surgery is acting really really disorganized, so i’m not sure i’m going to live thru it
i might come out with the wrong parts operated on (as if there’s not enough to worry about already)

Maybe you should take a Sharpie and draw a diagram!

Is it outpatient or are you staying overnight? They really kick people out early nowadays; there was an article in the paper. Let me know the details and I’ll come visit you in the hospital if they’re keeping you.

Flavored or unflavored seltzer water is very nice, especially when mixed with 100% fruit juices. Gatorade is much lower in sugar than soda and comes in convenient sizes. Also, those little bitty powdered drink mixes that are designed to go into bottled water are great and also very convenient. They can go right into your handbag. Milk is great, from the cow or from the soy bean. Herbal teas are always good, hot or cold. Don’t feel like you’re limited to soda or tap water.
Start the day with OJ and water. You’ll feel like you’re on vacation. :-)

now, if i can get Jane to send me some gluten-free muffins (like she made when we were there) to go with my OJ and H2O…then I’ll REALLy feel like i’m on vacation!
