What a Crock

Whatever respect I had left for Merriam-Webster and their little book of words has evaporated with the announcement of this years word of the year:

w00t

What?!? It’s not even a word! It’s got two zeros in there. Words are made up of letters, not numerals. GMAFB!

At least the Oxford folks’ word of the year makes some sense: locavore. That one I like.

part of the reason for the M-W ‘choice’ is that it was voted on by people visiting the M-W website. so, that alone takes it off of the respectable list. Chomsky’s theory of transformational grammar aside, I agree with Geren that words consist - and should only consist - of letters, not numbers!

Now, the Oxford woty is very cool! It’s a fun and funky word for an environmentally and economically responsible trend. Great concept!
