Afternoon at Assateague
Went to Assateague today. Although none of the ponies were on greeting duty today, one was being quite sociable. This one ambled over to our car as soon as we parked in one of the lots, and had to see if there was anything in the car suitable for lunch. No doubt the unfortunate result of far too many people feeding them over the years.
It was a good day for bird watching:
- Cedar Waxwings
- Yellow-rumped Warbler
- Northern Harrier
- Great Blue Heron
- immature Bald Eagle
None of these are uncommon, but I’d never had the privilege of seeing the waxwings, warbler or harrier until today. The Harrier paralleled us on the drive into the park, so it was very fun to watch. We saw it again toward the end of our day as we left one of the nature trails and it took off from its perch high up in a Loblolly. It was cold but pretty out there today. And the light as the sun began to sink in over the bay was just gorgeous.
