Where I’ve Been …

For those wondering what the heck has had Geren all tied up for the past several weeks … I’ve been busy moving GTV (Howard County’s cable TV station on Comcast 99/Verizon 44) to co-exist with HCC-TV (Howard Community College’s educational cable TV facility on Comcast 96/Verizon 41), and working to build the new, state-of-the-art facility there.

These pictures show one of the two control rooms (this one is the control room for the student studio), the camera “shading” and equipment rack for the student studio, the combined temporary master control system for both channels, and the main server room (still under construction) for the entire facility.

The completed facility will support a traditional studio; a virtual set studio; live broadcast capability from either studio, the Smith Theatre, the “Grand Prix Field,” or anywhere else on campus; two Avid Media Composer non-linear edit systems, five Final Cut Pro non-linear edit systems and sixteen Final Cut Express non-linear edit systems; a complete ProToolsHD audio recording and editing system; a voice-over/isolation booth; a foley stage and an internet radio station. An integrated matrix intercom system links both studios, the audio control room, master control and the server room.

We still have a bunch to do, so I’m still working very long hours every day. Eventually, I’ll catch up and re-surface in the “real” world.

Wow - that student studio control room looks almost bare, now that switcher panels have given way to a couple keyboards, mice and flat-screens. It looks more like a NOC than a tv station.

In the modern video world, a control room essential is a NOC!

The big difference between the student studio and the in-house production studio is that we’ll have virtual sets in the in-house studio. That will add one additional workstation at the back of the room. Otherwise, the in-house control room has less gear in it, since the audio board will be moved to a separate audio control room.

the post was great, the control room was fantastic. It reminds me about the movie “panic room” that movie gives me a freak. Glad that you post this kind of idea.
