Today was Steve Fisher’s annual “November is National Model Railroading Month,” and, as always, I go to help out.[Show as slideshow]
It was also a great opportunity to test out the new (to me) Sigma 24-135mm f/2.8-4.5 lens I picked up as an eBay steal. It’s both wider and longer than my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, although [...]
Fall Color
Those who know me know that I don’t generally go out for making “fall foliage” pictures. But, with a new lens, I’ll try anything. I was out shooting at Wilde Lake this afternoon, and did get a few I liked. You can see all the Wilde Lake photos here.
Post Revisions:
9 November, 2008 @ 19:00 [...]
I wrote the other day that I would be testing the Sigma APO 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM lens, and I’ve been writing up my adventures on the CMPG web site. To say that I have been impressed with the results would be an understatement. I’ve included here some images made yesterday at the Sultana Down [...]
I am a glutten for punishment. We went over to Wilde Lake again this afternoon and took some pictures. I actually got some sharp ones. While one or two sharpish ones were, by sheer luck, taken with the 70-200, the rest were taken with a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM. That’s a lens that sells [...]
We’ve spent the past couple of Saturdays at the Maryland Renaissance Festival — as we usually do this time of year. Albanach and The Mediaeval Baebes were again featured artists, along with the usual cast of zany characters. Most of my photos this year are of the Mediaeval Baebes and Albanach, wiith a few other [...]
Today found us at Wilde Lake again. Gee, there’s a surprise, huh? While there, we ran into friends Michael, Lisa and Bob, and Warren and his wife. We had a great time, taking pictures and talking about the wildlife surrounding the lake.
We got all the usual (and some unusual) shots of the Great Blue [...]
Headed out today with the intention of shooting some comparative shots with regards to my continuing 70-200mm f/2.8L IS sharpness issue. Today, comparisons between a 40D body and a Rebel XTi body. I tried to shoot images that were as close to identical as possible.
This image was made with the 40D, 70-200mm f/2.8L [...]
Okay, here’s the "more later" I promised.
This photograph was made in what might be considered an unusual manner. But, I’ve stumbled on to something that really seems to work well — using a telephoto zoom in conjunction with an extension tube to allow it to focus super-close. In this case, the lens is my Canon [...]
It is very, very, very good!
I took this photograph today using the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS that I’ve been off-and-on complaining about. We were at the annual Brookside Gardens Wings of Fancy event, and I was experimenting. More on that in a later posting, but I was so taken with this image that I wanted [...]
We took a walk around Wilde Lake tonight. Unfortunately, we got there a little late for photographs, although I did manage to snag a couple of good ones of this Great Blue Heron. He posed fairly well for us for a while, and then got tired of us and went off to find some dinner.
Even [...]
Once upon a time, before the Interstate Highway System, our nation’s roadways were dotted with something called "motor courts" — the forerunner of our modern hotels and motels. Most were family-owned and operated, and the layout was pretty much the same — a U-shaped, single-story building with the rooms (which consisted of a single [...]
Guys, you know how it goes. You work your butt off, and bring home your best offering to your bride, only to be flatly rejected. Well, it’s no different in the animal kingdom. Take, for instance, this Osprey pair we saw this past Sunday at Blackwater …
Our hero has literally brought home the bacon, in [...]
While some of our friends in the CMPG were out shooting pictures at the kinetic race this weekend, we were on the eastern shore, at Assateague Island, and the inaugural Jazz and Blues Bash in Berlin.
For whatever reason, the 70-200 decided it was going to make really sharp pictures. I don’t know what to [...]
Donna and I had a great walk around Wilde Lake this afternoon. In addition to the usual Herons, ducks and geese, we encountered a group of Bluebirds, and this hungry Red Shouldered Hawk.
The rest of my pictures from today’s outing are posted here, on my flickr stream.

We trundled back down to the southern end of Assateague today to take more pictures at the wildlife refuge. Yesterday, I had been frustrated by all of my images appearing fuzzy on the LCD display on the 40D. I had been shooting RAW only, which has a JPEG thumbnail embedded for preview purposes. However, it [...]
Today we ventured out to the Virginia part of Assateague. We haven’t been down that way in some time, and it was a lot of fun. I ended up being a lot less frustrated — though I was pretty frustrated when I was shooting. For some reason, the previews on the 40D LCD are [...]
We ventured out in the cold today to Assateague to take some pictures. It turned out to be a pretty crappy day for pictures, but, a good day for bird watching. We were able to see a Northern Harrier, a whole wad of Cedar Waxwings, a juvenile Bald Eagle and various and sundry gulls [...]
Donna and I spent most of yesterday back at the Renaissance Festival. I always enjoy the entertainment, but, as much or more, I enjoy watching (and trying to figure out) the people.
This guy looked like he was trying to make some kind of statement. I found it to be a bit ironic — cancer-stick [...]
Today’s Photo Friday theme is “The City.”
This shot is looking northwest from Washington Boulevard in Baltimore city, and is one of my “drive-by” shooting series. The images were literally taken as I was driving by places around town.
More images from the series may be found here, on flickr.

We spent most of yesterday at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. We were supposed to spend the whole day, but some miscommunications caused us to have to leave earlier then we had planned. There was still time to get some good pictures, though, and we’ll be going back for a full day of fun and [...]
Today’s Photo Friday theme is “Beach.”
I haven’t posted a photo meme picture in quite some time. There hasn’t been time or inclination or something. However, today’s theme just sorta fit. We’re headed out to the beach this weekend, and I happen to have a couple of pictures from our last visit handy. So, here they [...]
Lest you think that all I’ve been doing is playing with motorcycles over the past few days …
This past Friday night, Deanna Bogart played for Chapelgate Presbyterian’s 2nd Annual Night of Jazz event. I took a bunch of photographs for the church. Click on the picture above to see a slide show of Deanna’s [...]
Now that Donna’s uploaded a bunch of images from our trip to her flickr stream, I thought it would be neat to do a “Maine Vacations” slide show or two for you. I’m working on figuring out how to make them loop, but haven’t gotten there yet… Anyway, here are the slide shows:

Our vacation is rapidly drawing to a close, and we spent part of our last full day sailing. We went out on a short “cruise” aboard Surprise, a Friendship Sloop similar to the one pictured, which sails out of Southwest Harbor.
The wind was blowing 15 or so when we left dock with a single foresail [...]
It was a long day yesterday, and we were too tired when we got back to even download pictures from our cameras! So, yesterday’s update is being posted this morning.
We returned to the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railroad Museum (see our visit from last year) to ride the train and meet up with some friends [...]
Well, no humpback sightings today, although we did see some of the Fin Back Whales much more closely today. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get any good pictures, as the boat was crowded, and many of the people on board we just plain rude. If we go again this trip, I’ll be sure to get [...]
Today was another fun and different day here in Ba Haba, Maine. Donna and I rented a pair of little 50cc scooters for the day, and zipped off around Acadia.
I had a Vespa-esque Roketa “Venice” model, and Donna’s was a Qlink Axon50. The Roketa was woefully under-powered — in many cases, it was all I could do to make [...]
This is going to be a “reverse order” story, because the end of our day was so exciting! While sunrise was spectacular, and sunset was pretty, too, the whales were about the coolest thing going.
That, folks, is a Finback Whale. It’s called a Finback because it has a fin on its back. And we saw easily [...]
This is why we got up a 4 o’clock this morning.
Along with a couple of hundred other folks, we trekked to the top of Cadillac Mountain to be the first folks in the U.S. to see the sun rise this morning. What surprised us was how quickly the crowd dispersed. The sun popped up over the [...]
… and in the surrounding area. Highlights today:
Breakfast — awesome French Toast, and some sort of chicken sausage.
Scenic boat ride — saw seals and an osprey.
Donna tries motor scooter with good success (sorry, no picture).
Big cruise ship in Bar Harbor.
More fun photography.
We’re heading up to the top of Cadillac Mountain in the morning [...]
I’ve been spoiled, again, for vacations. There’s just no better way to go on a vacation than staying at a B&B. I don’t think I could ever do a “hotel-based” trip again. The place we’re staying has three cats that pretty much rule the roost, especially Warwick, who’s a big, fuzzy, short-haired cat that’s a good [...]
We finally made it onto a plane, about and hour and a half late, and landed in Portland. After a minor miscue in finding the rental car desk (Enterprise is off-site at Portland), we were on our way to Bar Harbor.
We settled into the B&B (a place called Aysgarth Station), and strolled into the bustling downtown. [...]
Saturday morning, we went off to the Maryland Zoo to have breakfast with a couple of polar bears. And, while the experience was pretty interesting, I’d have to say that these were a couple of the laziest bears I’ve ever seen in my life.
The bear in the picture to the left is Magnate Magnet, [...]
This past weekend was spent at my parent’s place on the Eastern Shore, and, even though it was un-godly hot, we made a couple of trips over to Assateague to take some pictures. I’ve uploaded some pictures to a new set at Flickr, and I’ll be adding to this set over the next couple of days. [...]

Yeah, I know there’s stuff I should be working on…
Here’s another tricky one! This time, it’s an old pewter pitcher against the white background. I found that if I used the same setup from the previous shot, I lost all detail on the right side, except for the arc of the handle. So, I [...]
Our Alien Bees B400 monolights arrived yesterday, and I’m spending a couple of hours this morning working with them, just to get some idea of how they’re going to perform. So far, I’m pretty pleased.
This image is a difficult one, and it’s what I decided to attempt first — a mostly black subject with [...]
I posted a few more pictures from Friday’s Brookside Gardens trip to my flickr photo stream. All my Brookside Gardens images may be seen by clicking here.
So, what lens do you think I used for this image? (Those of you who have looked at the image info at flickr can’t guess). Look at the [...]
Since it was such a gorgeous day (and since I’d just picked up a Tokina 12-24mm f/4 wide-angle zoom for the Canon), Donna and I decided to head down to Brookside Gardens after she got off work today.
In honesty, the light was mostly too harsh, but, I figured I’d go ahead a shoot. It’s not as if I [...]
Here are some pictures from the Jamestown Settlement, which is an interpretive living history exhibit and museum located adjacent the actual National Park. All of the images were taken with the Rebel XTi, and in no case did I use flash.

As I mentioned early today, we woke up to a bitter cold, snowy day here in Williamsburg. But, we didn’t let that stop us from getting out and getting lot’s of pictures.
We really didn’t expect the snow, and neither did anyone else…
Occasionally, the sun would pop out and give us some light, and cause [...]
Or, who’s frigging idea was this?!?!?
Here’s what we woke up to this morning. Yeah, this is shot through the hotel room window.
Mind you, this here vacation we’re on was Donna’s idea of having a nice trip to Williamsburg to see the tulips in bloom and have everything be nice and spring-like and …
WARM!
WITHOUT SNOW!
We [...]
This was about the first thing we saw once we finally made it to the historic area of Williamsburg. A little odd, we thought, this being Easter weekend, and all.
We wondered around the area, generally scoping out for shooting for the next couple of days. I pushed the XTi a bit, doing pretty much [...]
These images (yesterday’s Yellow Rose Cavern, and today’s Tulip Deconstruction 1) are my first attempts at using extension tubes. Here’s the story.
The van was in the shop yesterday — again – so I had to drive Donna to and from work. On the way home, we stopped into Harbor Freight Tools to get a heavy-duty cart [...]
The result of stacking three extension tubes (36, 20 and 12mm) behind a 90mm macro lens on a Nikon D70s. I’d guess the area of this image, in reality, is maybe 3/8″ tall by about 1/2″ wide. It’s amazing to me how shallow the depth of field is when the magnification is this high, and [...]
Well, now, this is cool. One of my pictures made the “Interesting” list at flickr.

I’ve posted more pictures from my trip with Thom to my flickr site. The set includes straight images, as well as some that have had the Orton effect applied.
While I currently apply this effect using Photoshop, I don’t believe it strays from my general rule of not doing in the computer what I couldn’t achieve [...]
I went out shooting with my friend, Thom, today, on a tour of lighthouses and covered bridges. Here’s one of my favorite’s from the day. I shot basically two lenses all day long — the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 and the new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, and had an absolute blast!
This image is of the Turkey Point [...]
We had a CMPG outing today at Brookside Gardens, in Wheaton. The folks there were nice enough to let us, as a group, come in an hour before opening time so that we could use our tripods in the conservatory (during regular hours, no tripods are allowed inside) and give us great access to the [...]
I’ve uploaded some more pictures from our Maine vacation. This one kind of reminds me of a picture I remember taking as a child, on a trip to Acadia National Park with my parents.
That original picture was pretty terrible, I think, shot with a cheap plastic camera called Diana. The picture is but a [...]
I finally got around to uploading a few pictures from our Maine trip to my flickr site. There are only a few there so far, and probably none from the original postings here.
Most of these are posted because I took them with my Tokina 12-24mm lens, and my friend Thom and I have been [...]
Geren’s Photolog / Photo Blog has been moved to it’s own page. You can see it here. There’s still a bit of tweaking to do, both here and on the photo blog site. Once I’m done with that, I’ll also switch Donna’s over to an identicle configuration. We won’t stop posting pictures here, but there [...]
HamdenFest 2006
Uploaded by gerenm.
The rest of my images from the Baltimore flickr Show at Hampdenfest 2006 have been uploaded. I was trying to do it during the day yesterday — from Hamdenfest — but the battery in the laptop died on me about half-way through the day. Anyway, my pics can be found here.

Geren & Donna visit the ren fest…
And lots of pictures were taken. Some of Geren’s may be found here (more to follow added 9/11/06). We’ll get Donna’s uploaded to her flickr site as soon as possible.
Donna also got some really nice new garb at the fest this year. You can look forward to seeing pictures [...]
I wrote previously that there was no built-in flickr integration for Windows Live Writer. However, the Windows Live Writer Plugins site has a couple of excellent plugins available.

I’m still fooling with Live Writer, and in many ways, it’s really excellent. These images were all dragged in from my flickr space, though links don’t work at present. I’m sure that will come in a later version. Anyway, this layout was done entirely with the Live Writer program, making quick photo album page [...]
Dog Day Afternoon, originally uploaded by gerenm.

I took this a couple weeks back. It was a dog day afternoon in Ellicott City. Donna was helping out our friends at Sanctuary Studios, and I roved around taking pictures.

Today’s Thursday Challenge is “Outdoors.”
Lake Elkhorn Tree
Another image from our wander around Lake Elkhorn. This one’s been fully HDR processed, and heavily tone mapped. The whole tone-mapping thing is something of an extreme for me. I always claimed that I didn’t want to do anything to my images in the computer [...]
Independence Day
Originally uploaded by gerenm.
We went to the fireworks at the Columbia Lakefront this year. The only reason we went there at all is because I was shooting video for GTV. Anyway, while I was taping, I shot a few fireworks stills, breaking all the “rules” to do it.
Conventional wisdom is that there are specific [...]
This past Saturday, Rob and I went wandering around Fell’s Point. A few of the pictures from the day can be found in this gallery. As you can see, several of the pictures have been tone mapped, and some have not. It’s a fun thing, but not ever picture lends itself to being tone mapped.

If someone were to have told me I could make an “art photograph” with a camera phone, I would never have believed them. In fact, I might have said they were out of thier mind. However, with its 1.3MP imager, my new LG VX8100 “High Resolution Camera Phone” is as “good” as my original digital [...]
Hal Ketchum in Concert

Today’s Photo Friday challenge is “famous.”

Today’s Thursday Challenge is Valuable.

I tend more to think about what has value to [...]
Tulip Trees in the Evening

We’re just back from one of our trips to the Eastern Shore to visit my parents, this time for Thanksgiving. For a good part of the weekend, I was on a mission — to get a new pair of Sperry Topsiders — an amazingly difficult task that took three days to complete. But, that’s another [...]

This image, and the rest found here were all made after the sun set. In each case, the camera was tripod-mounted. The shutter was open for 5-, 10-, even 20-seconds at ISO100! [...]

The image was made this past weekend at the Celtic Festival near Snow Hill, MD.

We had a pretty whirlwind weekend, all over the Eastern Shore.
Pictures from the weekend!
Saturday we went to the Chesapeake Maritime Museum for their annual small boat festival. It’s always neat to see all the beautifully built boats. They have a great time racing them and showing them off. All the owners love to talk about [...]

I’ve been using Google’s Picasa image management software for a few weeks now, and I find more and more to like about it all the time.
Tonight, for fun, I decided to try playing a bit with the built-in image editing functions on a portrait I shot of Donna. I made the image at Brookside Gardens [...]

For those interested, here’s the full version of the photograph that I took the header graphic from. I made this photograph a few years ago, before I had a digital camera, using my old Canon Rebel S-II, and a Canon 35-80mm zoom, on Ilford XP2 chromogenic black-and-white film. No exposure information was recorded, [...]

Remember last year, when we went to visit Donna’s parents in Montana? We put up a few pictures then, but not many. And, since the site’s been completely redesigned twice since then, any pictures we had up have long since come down. So, I’ve uploaded a new gallery space with a few of my images [...]
Yesterday, Donna and I decided to get out of the house and take some pictures. I had some NYI assignments to complete, and we thought that it would be a good time to do it. We ended up at the Avalon Area of the Patapsco State Park.

Today’s Thursday Challenge is “Favorite,” meaning, choose your favorite image over the past year. So far, the most exciting image I’ve created, as far as I am concerned, is the picture I used for Photo Friday last week. So, here it is again …

I’ve been taking a corespondence photography course from the New York Institute of Photography. Well, taking is a loose term. I’ve been paying for and receiving the course materials for some time now. But, it’s just been too hectic around here to do anything with them.
Well, yesterday (or was it Thursday?), I’d finally [...]

Today’s Photo Friday theme is “chaos.” I’d say this image calms chaos, turning a raging sea into a milky calm.

Today’s Thursday Challenge theme is “Weather.” Today, I offer a couple of older images … of what the current weather isn’t … SNOW!
/random/SnowyCreekBed.jpg
This image was made quite a few years ago — in 1979! Our hot-shot meteorologist in town had predected 3 inches of snow. We got three feet! When I was finally able to [...]
/random/Sidewalk_Toad.jpg
I came across this little fellow last weekend as we were carrying our bags into my parents’ house for our most recent weekend visit. He/she/it very patiently waited for me as I put down all the stuff I had in my hands, got out my camera, put the flash on it, and then got down [...]
Our most recent “assignment” at the CMPG was “Framing.” The idea was to frame the subject of our photographs in interesting ways. The image here is one that I did not display, because it was taken well before the assignment period — by a couple of years!

Today’s Photo Friday challenge is “One.”

I’ve dusted off another older image for this challenge. Sorry. But, as soon as I saw the e-mail with the image topic, my mind immediately went back to this image on this particular day in May, two years ago.
The fog was so thick that day, that you couldn’t see 50 [...]
Better late than never, I offer two images for this week’s Thursday Challenge, Hands.
/random/hands.jpg
This first image was made at the Towson Festival a couple of years ago, with the old Olympus digital. These are plaster-casts, custom made at the festival, of the hands of attendees. The proprietor of the stall was very accomodating, allowing me [...]
/geren/bodyscape/Orchid.jpg
Yet another case of Donna suffering for my art … this time providing a beautiful curved landscape to support this orchid bloom. The flower was used as a garnish on her dinner last Saturday evening!
The image was made with my Minolta DiMAGE A2, and mildly manipulated for color and contrast using Photoshop 7. A little [...]

This chick is serious about not missing a picture. Donna and I happened upon this driver, shooting pictures through the sunroof, while on our way home from our trip to the Eastern Shore this past weekend. I commented that she (the driver) was a woman after my own heart. Some of you may remember my [...]
Today’s Thursday Challenge is “green.” Yes, it’s been a long time since I’ve participated in any of the photo memes. I’ve just been awfully busy — something I’m still struggling with….

This photograph was made at the Columbia Lakefront this past Sunday evening, using my Konica-Minolta Dimage A2. The exposure was 1/50 at f:7.1 at ISO100. [...]
As promised, here are a few images from this past Sunday…

I think I finally figured out the whole moving water thing. Now, this is not a stellar photograph, by any stretch of the imagination. But, I did figure out a recipe for making those silky-water waterfall pictures. Of course, this is from the A2. (There [...]

Tonight brings another meeting of the CMPG, and tonight we’ll be talking about the images from our latest photo assignment - Alphabet. This is my offering. I happened across this tree along the side of US Rte 50, while we were on the way to visit my parents a few weeks back.
I about scared the [...]
In case you were wondering, here’s a rendering of [one of] my rasterbation[s]…
/random/pict0280_sm.jpg
This one was made to fit on six sheets of standard letter-sized paper — the resulting print is 22 inches tall and 25 1/2 inches wide. The moire pattern in the image shown here is a result of resizing the rasterized image without [...]

This week’s Photo Friday theme is “Symbol.” Taken at the Gettysburg battlefield park, this statue in silouhette is a symbol of the freedoms we enjoy in the United States.

Today’s Thursday Challenge theme is “Books.”
This image was made on our most recent trip to Williamsburg, VA. They have two restored, hand-operated, presses there, and they use the presses to print a large number of publications and reproduction publications. The time-honored methods are still used, too. Type is set by hand, not by computer, and [...]
/random/Jennifer.jpg
This an old picture that I shot while working on some promotional material for a singer/songwriter back in the early ’90s. I call it an accidental portrait because of the way the image, as presented here, came about…
The lighter areas in the image, where the picture fades to white, are the result of fogged film! [...]

This bright red “flower” is a type of honeysuckle. I think it looks like nature’s idea of grafitti
There’s a ulterior motive for this shot — to test a new WP plugin called PhotoPress for uploading images. It seems a lot easier and a lot cleaner.

During a recent CMPG meeting held at the Gallerie Elan in Ellicott City, I became interested in a display of cast pottery sculpture. Several of these images now grace the photo galleries, filed under “Faces.”
I found the detail and realism in these cast sculptures to be incredible. If it weren’t for the eyes (or lack [...]

Some of you may remember that a couple of years back, I went with members of the Baltimore Camera Club to Brookside Gardens for their annual butterfly exhibit.
This morning after church, Donna and I decided we needed to “get away” for a photographic expedition. I remembered seeing the signs that the exhibit was returning this [...]
